Good luck with school, and feel free to PM me with tool questions. Steer clear of air and power tools, though :) There are many, many good tools to be had for good prices. I picked up a Silver Eagle hex socket set, SBS46SE, MSRP $360/Student $142, for about $50 just yesterday. Every month or so, I'll find a great deal, like a brand new 1/2" drive Techangle. I have a route of about 10 shops that I hit every weekend, and without fail, every week yields a good deal. If you put in the effort, pawn shops will pay you divedends. They'll also appreciate it if you do buy something from them. They'll totally understand, and shouldn't pester you.

I've spent more money than I otherwise would have, but I've accomplished a few things as well - I've earned the trust of my Snap-on and Matco guy by proving that I'm reliable because I have a little skin in the game, they're more likely to work with me on warranty issues and I've helped build my credit a bit.įirst day they come by, hop on the truck, introduce yourself, be amazed by shiny tools, then explain to them that you still have access to student pricing. However, if you start work while you're still in school (I did - excellent decision for me) I recommend buying a few hundred dollars worth of tools, on weekly payments, through whichever trucks service your shop. I've used mine extensively, and will continue to do so until I can't anymore. Last point - these student discounts are fantastic. Torque wrenches, ratchets, sockets, fixed combination wrenches, pry bars, some of their pliers, and screwdrivers (Yes, I have used Felo, Wera and Wiha I much prefer my Insticnt hard handles). Having said that, I do believe that they make the best examples of a lot of tools out there. In fact, the student discounts we get should open your eyes to just how much of that price is pure branding. Snap-on is a great company, despite the sometimes obscene prices.

Too risky to spend the big bucks with them in my opion. You may have access to a reliable dealer (warranty source) now, but there's no way to know if you'll have one at your next job, or in the next city. I would not choose Mac for the majority, but if they make something that you can really use, then go for it. Unlike Snap-on, however, their entire catalog is discounted, from scan tools and Fluke meters to socket rails and creepers. I think there is one in my entire city.įor what it's worth, if you qualify for the SEP program, you also qualify for Matco's discount program, which is also about 50%. Mac has a fair amount of good tools and some incredibly sharp looking toolboxes, but Mac trucks are notoriously hard to find. Here's how I see the big three - Snap-on has the highest quality and consistency, but you pay a distinct premium for it Matco is less expensive and has an excellent range of more specialty and unique tools, but a lot of their tools are Apex rebrands marked up about 30-60%.
